When does a rug need repair?

What is the difference between binding and serging?
Binding adds a flat tape edge to a rug. It is affordable and durable, and it is how we turn carpet remnants and commercial carpet into custom area rugs and entry mats, with many colors to match. Serging is the traditional finish, where a coordinating yarn is wrapped around the edge by machine to look hand-wrapped. Serging suits fine rugs, stair runners, and resized rugs, and it can even replace lost fringe on some rugs. We have wrapped edges this way on private jets for decades and take pride in our custom wool serging.
How do you repair fringe on an Oriental rug?
Fringe is not decoration; it is the end of the warp threads that hold the rug together. When the securement stitch that locks those warps breaks, we re-secure it by hand so the rug stops coming apart. If the fringe itself is gone or badly worn, we can replace it, or finish the end with a serged edge that protects the foundation. We always check the securement stitch at intake, because fixing it early is a small job and ignoring it is not.
Can a rug with holes or moth damage be rewoven?
Yes. Holes, tears, and missing sections are rebuilt by reweaving and reknotting, matching the color, wool, and pattern so the repair blends in. This is the right approach for antique, heirloom, and hand-knotted rugs where pattern continuity matters. When a full repair would cost more than the rug is worth, we can instead secure the damaged area to stop it from spreading, especially if it sits under furniture.
Three decades of binding and serging craft
Our edge work carries on The Rug Bindery, which served the Treasure Valley for three decades with custom binding and sculpted rug fabrication. George, the craftsman behind it, stepped toward retirement, so Fiber Specialties brought his services into our repair shop and his clients keep the same workmanship. You may still see George at the shop, working on projects and passing along thirty years of edge-finishing skill.
Cleaning that supports a repair
Many rugs that come in for repair also need cleaning, before the work or as part of a refresh. We clean natural-fiber rugs, wool, silk, viscose, and grass, with a gentle multi-step process and finish them wrapped in acid-free paper. Rugs exposed to pet accidents, mildew, or water damage go through a full decontamination bath that flushes and sanitizes the fibers. We never use harsh chemicals that could harm delicate fibers or dyes.
